A Look at Cafe 233

Food service at Olathe Northwest can often go unappreciated, but the work and care put in is something that the cafeteria staff takes pride in. Dorothy Burg, four year cafeteria server, loves working in the food service business.

"My favorite part about working in food services at ONW is getting to see kids everyday." Burg said.

Cafe 233 strives to bring nutritious meals for a reasonable price. Everyday the food is delivered to each school then the food prep starts. A typical day includes dating the food, preparing it, cooking, setting up the lines, serving the meals, restocking, clean up, and then dishes.

The most challenging part of the job is "standing on feet all day and staying on time" but through that Burg explains how she has learned how to work with well with other people and time management.

This year all schools in the United States began a new initiative called "Smart Snacks in School" to bring healthier foods to schools. The USDA set nutrition standards that are science-based to meet all criteria for a nutritious meal.

As hungry students come through the lunch line, the cafeteria staff provides students with a healthy meal and a smile. Overall Burg loves being at Olathe Northwest because "The kids are respectful and it's a great place to be."
