Debbie Evers: The Smile of Northwest
When you walk in to a place of business, what do you expect? You walk in, possibly sit down for a wait, someone needs to check you in, and you try to get where you’re going. When you walk into Olathe Northwest, you’re not a number in the system; you’re a face and a face that will be greeted by one of the warmest welcomes.
Debbie Evers, Northwest’s own office receptionist who dedicates her time to kindness and warming the hearts of even the most unknown stranger.
“When people walk in that door, I plan to put a smile on their faces, if not then I’ve failed,” Evers said.
As a staff member at Northwest, she is the first face that people see when they walk in. However, unlike the teachers, her work is not always in flashing lights.
“I don’t mind if my work itself is noticed or not, I’m worried how I affect the individuals that come here,” Evers said.
The job, of course, can be busy but Evers rarely feels the stress.
“With everything that has happened this year, these students have experienced something that no one should have to. With two deaths of loved peers… that’s stress. This job is inanimate at that point,” Evers said.
Through the hundreds of faces she sees every morning, not everyone is likely to be kind, but that doesn’t change Evers’ attitude. And no matter her mood, she will give a smile and continue to help them or work on her own duties.
“I check my attitude at the door, no matter what it is, because the person on the other side of the counter does not care if I have had a bad day or not,” Evers said.
No matter the student’s mood, Evers won’t know the complications of that individuals life either. That is why she is who she is, the stranger walking in is intended to be brightened by Evers, and by the crack of her smile, there’s no way you couldn’t.
“For all I know, I could be the only kind word they hear today. I don’t know what their life is like and you never know what someone is going through. After some of the things taking place this year, people need a smile,” Evers said.
“I only fear these students will be offended by my acquaintance. Oh, and I fear earthquakes”, said Evers with a smile.
